Indian healthcare delegation visits Liverpool

A delegation of leading medical experts from India recently paid a two day visit to Liverpool to learn more about health management systems utilised by the city’s healthcare sector.

The group of 11 doctors and medical sector CEOs toured Liverpool’s hospitals and research centres including Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, and the University of Liverpool.

The visit saw the delegation hear from experts in healthcare management systems, including Professor Arpan Guha, Head of School of Postgraduate Medicine at the University of Liverpool; Alex Wells Head of Service Improvement at Royal Liverpool Hospital; and Professor Janet Hemingway, Director of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine .

The trip was organised by Liverpool’s inward investment agency Invest Liverpool and the Confederation for Indian Industry and is part of a wider UK visit by the delegation, which is learning more about Lean & Six Sigma management styles in a medical context.

Lean & Six Sigma is a disciplined, data-driven approach and methodology for eliminating defects in any process – from manufacturing to transactional and from product to service.

Ellen Cutler, Director of Invest Liverpool, said:

“We’re delighted to be welcoming this delegation to the city. India’s healthcare sector is one of the world’s most innovative and fastest growing, so it’s a real testament to the city’s strengths in healthcare management that a group of experts of this calibre has asked to learn more about our approach. Adapting management systems to improve processes and develop a more systematic, efficient methodology within a healthcare context is a key challenge for hospitals and healthcare organisations across the world. This visit is a great opportunity to begin a process of knowledge sharing and open innovation and collaboration and we hope that our visitors gleaned some interesting and beneficial insights.”
