Leeds firm acquires Mersey accountants
An accountancy firm in Birkenhead that turns over £250,000 a year has been acquired by a Leeds-based practice. Tony McDonough reports
Birkenhead accountancy firm boss Ben Thexton has sold his business for an undisclosed sum just three years after it was launched.
Ben established TAC Accountants in 2019. Its three-strong team services 167 clients and generates £250,000 a year in revenues. Leeds-based Northern Accountants has acquired the business for an undisclosed sum.
All current TAC staff will be kept on and Ben, who becomes a director of the enlarged firm, said it would be “business as usual”. His intention was always to sell the firm, which focuses on the property and construction sector, after three years of growth.
“We now have the support of an award-winning firm that has been nationally recognised for its ability to drive transformational financial change within its clients’ organisations,” said Ben.
“They’re extremely passionate about ensuring customers’ finance functions operate as efficiently as possible. It’s my job to ensure more companies in Liverpool benefit from this level of service.
“With an already high propensity of construction and landlord customers, and a strong relationship with the construction industry, Northern Accountants is a great fit for us. They intuitively utilise the role of tech within the accounting world, but they’re all about people too.”

This acquisition will transform Northern Accountants into a firm with £1.8m of revenues, 20 employees and 530 customers. The business was established in 2008.
Managing director and founder, Phil Ellerby, added: “We don’t currently have any clients in Liverpool, but as a business we have a personal affinity to the area, and we perform well in TAC’s key sectors.
“So, when Ben started talking to us about the sale of his company, conversations quickly gathered pace. We’re delighted to bring them into the Northern Accountants family.”
