Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) saw more than 576,000 passengers take off and land in July – making it the busiest month in its 92-year history.

This beat the previous monthly passenger record of 569,000 passengers set in August 2007. July also saw the airport achieve its busiest single day ever with more than 22,000 passengers on Monday, July 28, following the start of the school holidays.

And LJLA, which had already forecast a record summer, believes the record may be broken again in August, normally the busiest month of any year. Chief executive John Irving said: “To reach our best ever monthly passenger throughput is a tremendous achievement for everyone working at the airport.

“It something that we are all really proud of, particularly when we think back to where we have come from in recent years. Just four years ago at the height of the pandemic related travel restrictions, passenger numbers were around 80% down on where we are now

“This is all set to be our busiest summer season ever and we look forward to welcoming hundreds of thousands of passengers through the airport over the coming weeks, helping to get their holidays off to the best possible start.”

In 2024 LJLA broke through the 5m passengers barrier for the first time in several years thanks to the arrival of Jet2 and Jet2Holidays as well as continued expansion by airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair.

Mediterranean and sunshine resorts dominate what is likely to be the top 10 most popular destinations from Liverpool over the summer, with flights to Alicante, Palma, Malaga, Faro, Tenerife, Antalya, Lanzarote and Dalaman amongst the busiest.

LJLA has already been voted the best airport in the UK by passengers and the experience has been enhanced this year by the installation of new equipment, speeding up the journey through security.

And significant investment in works to improve the main food and beverage areas were completed ahead of the summer peak. It means passengers can look forward to the airport’s renowned high levels of customer experience despite the growing numbers.
