A proposed new Lidl store in south Liverpool will create around 40 jobs and will offer electric vehicle charging points. Tony McDonough reports

Supermarket chain Lidl has revealed further details of its plans to build a new store on the site on a former Taskers outlet in Wavertree in south Liverpool.
In late August LBN revealed Lidl had acquired the 4.6-acre site on Wavertree Road. It also includes a 120,000 sq ft warehouse and a surface level car park. Taskers, Liverpool’s best-known homeware brand, had closed its store on the site in 2017.
Dating back to the 1950s, Taskers has had to battle the rise of e-commerce, higher inflation, interest rates and a cost-of-living crisis hitting consumer confidence. It also faced soaring costs in freight. It now operates online and from a single store in Aintree.
When CBRE offered the Wavertree site to market in 2024 it said it was suitable for a number of uses including residential, student accommodation, offices, laboratory, education and a hotel. Previously there had been plans to build 200 homes.
But now Lidl has swooped and has started asking local residents on their thoughts on the new store. It is likely to include a bakery, the much-loved ‘Middle of Lidl’ and customer toilets with baby changing facilities.
Creating around 40 jobs the store will also offer electric vehicle charging points, a large covered area dedicated to bicycle parking, accessible and parent-and-child parking bays.

Stuart Jardine, regional head of property at Lidl GB, said: “We’re continuing to create Lidl fans across Liverpool, and are excited to confirm our plans to bring our newest store to Edge Hill.
“We know demand is high for us to bring a Lidl store to serve the community here, and want as many residents as possible to send us their thoughts.
“While a planning application is in the process of being submitted to Liverpool City Council, community feedback will help shape the plans as we work our way through the planning process.
“If approved, this state-of-the-art store will create jobs, breathe life into an underutilised piece of land, and enhance local access to our quality, affordable offering.”
This will be Lidl’s second attempt to open a store in Wavertree after it admitted defeat in 2023 in its bid to build a new outlet on the former Abbey Cinema following opposition from heritage campaigners.
