New Lord Mayor of Liverpool in triple charity pledge

The new Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Tony Conception, was installed this week at a ceremony at Liverpool Town Hall.

Councillor Concepcion, a retired Vauxhall Motors worker and senior shop steward, grew up in the city centre and now lives in Knotty Ash, close to the new Alder Hey Hospital.

He has been married to his wife Ann, who will be Lady Mayoress, since 1969, after they both met on a Royal Iris river cruise when they were both 16. They have two children and two grandchildren.

Cllr Concepcion was first elected to the city council 25 years ago and served on many committees from 1990 to 1998 including, housing, transport, and planning.

Since being re-elected for Yew Tree Ward in 2010, he has served on the planning committee and several Select Committees and outside bodies including the Merseyside Recycling Waste Authority (MRWA).

Cllr Concepcion said:

“My wife and I are both thrilled, excited and deeply honoured to accept this position. To be Liverpool’s first citizen and ambassadors for our great City is a wonderful opportunity that we will cherish forever.”

The Lord Mayor of Liverpool is known as the first citizen and chosen representative of the City, acting as a focal point for the community as well as promoting the city and forging national and international links.

Cllr Concepcion will be sponsoring three charities during his year as Lord Mayor – Ronald McDonald House at Alder Hey, Kids in Need and Distress (KIND) and Lister Steps Carnegie Community Hub.

He said:

“I’m hoping to raise a lot of money for these charities during my year as Lord Mayor.

“All my sponsored charities are focused on helping children and families cope with difficult situations and develop community engagement.”
