Low-cost airline easyJet will create 40 new jobs when it bases an extra aircraft at Liverpool Airport and launches a new summer route. Tony McDonough reports

Low cost airline easyJet will add the Greek island of Corfu to its list of Liverpool routes from next summer.

And easyJet will be basing a new 156-seat Airbus A319 aircraft at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. This will be its sixth plane based out of Liverpool and will see the creation of around 40 jobs.

This latest route to Corfu will begin on June 4 and will depart on Sundays. Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK country manager, said: “The addition of another aircraft will help us to further strengthen our network in Liverpool.

“It will offer customers an even wider range of destinations, like our new route to Corfu. And with flights for autumn 2023 on sale today, customers can also book early for next autumn and snap up the best fares across our network to find a great-value getaway or October half term holiday.

“We know that holidays are important to people, not only does travelling connect friends and family but it offers a wealth of benefits, from promoting wellbeing to experiencing new cultures.”

At the end of November easyJet reported full-year losses of £178m – a considerable improvement on £2bn combined losses during the two years of the pandemic.

Publishing its full-year results for the 12 months to September 30, 2022, easyJet reported revenues of almost £5.8bn. This was a significant improvement on the £1.2bn for the previous year.

As the carrier emerged from the pandemic it saw passenger numbers soar from 20m last year to almost 70m.

Along with much of the aviation sector, easyJet endured a difficult spring as lower staffing levels at airlines and airports struggled to cope with the surge in post-pandemic demand.
