Owner of Liverpools Sandon opens its doors to the elderly this Christmas

Self-made Liverpool millionaire entrepreneur Kate Stewart is holding a series of events before and after Christmas at the Sandon in Anfield for local elderly people.
Ms Stewart acquired the famous venue close to Liverpool FC, which dates back to 1870, earlier this year and has spent £100,000 on a refurbishment to attract corporate events.
But in the run-up to Christmas she is also opening up the doors for a number of events aimed at elderly people who might otherwise be home alone.
The senior citizens events, which have won the backing of Liverpool’s City Council’s Mayoral Lead for Older People, Gerard Woodhouse, involve entertainment, dinner and various free activities.
The first events have taken place, while the December Christmas party has sold out. However, Ms Stewart has emphasised that the elderly are always welcome at The Sandon over Christmas and is already planning a series of events in the New Year.
She said: “If it wasn’t for my grandparents, I wouldn’t be where I am today. They played a big role in my life. It pains me to see so many older people – who’ve given their lives to looking after their kids and grandkids – left alone at Christmas. It’s just not fair.
“I hope the events we’re running at The Sandon give people a chance to see a friendly face, have a chat and generally get into the festive spirit. You’re guaranteed good company and a great chat.
“We’re at maximum capacity, showing incredible demand. But even those who didn’t get tickets can still pop in any time and get a warm Sandon welcome.”
Cllr Woodhouse added: “Loneliness can have a major, negative impact on people’s physical and mental health. Nobody should be sitting at home on their own, especially at Christmas when the effects of isolation are sometimes even more keenly felt.
“Kate’s events for older people at The Sandon are a great way of giving back to the community.”
