Vimto maker Nichols has announced the passing of chief financial officer and company secretary Richard Newman.
In a statement to the stock exchange on Monday, Newton-le-Willows-based Nichols said: “It is with profound sadness and deepest regret that Nichols plc announces the passing of its chief financial officer and company secretary, Richard Newman.
“Richard passed away on March 15 at home, surrounded by his family, after facing cancer with stoicism and grace.”
It added: “Richard’s dedication, leadership, and contributions to Nichols over the last 12 months have been invaluable, and he will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of working with him.
“The board’s thoughts and sympathies are with Richard’s wife, Lynne, and their three sons during this incredibly difficult time.”
A graduate of Aston University, Richard initially qualified as an accountant at PwC in Birmingham but decided he wanted to work in industry. He was a financial controller at chocolate giant Cadbury and during 15 years with the company worked in the UK, Ireland and Australia.
He later worked as finance director at coach operator National Express, packaging firm DS Smith and, before he joined Nichols, was chief financial officer at tissue maker Accrol.
Of working at Nichols, he said: “Working for a business with a great history and heritage makes it unique. We are all temporary custodians of the Vimto brand and everyone has a role to play to ensure that the business flourishes for another 100 years and more.”
David Taylor will continue in his role as non-board finance director to ensure continuity and Prism Cosec will provide support in the role of company secretary while the board considers permanent succession arrangements.
Nichols sells the famous Vimto brand in more than 60 countries around the world. It is also behind the SLUSH PUPPiE Feel Good, Starslush, ICEE, Levi Roots and Sunkist soft drink brands.
Vimto is particularly popular in the Muslim world during the holy month of Ramadan. It provides a quick boost of sugar-filled energy following the dawn ’til dusk fast.
