Zorba’s marks 40th anniversary in the city

One of the city’s oldest and most favoured restaurants celebrated its 40th anniversary on Sunday, packing the place out with a party to end all others.

More than 120 people descended on Zorbas Restaurant on Leece Street, which first opened its doors back in 1974. Owners Louisa and Haralambos Michael marked the milestone with a special celebration, which was attended by their regular customers including DJ Roger Phillips and former Lord Mayor Eddie Clein.

Guests from all over the region tucked into Zorbas’ famous traditional Greek cuisine and enjoyed a glass of fizz or two as they swapped fond memories of the famous restaurant.

Lord Mayor Cllr Erica Kemp also presented owner Haralambos Michael with a plaque commemorating his family’s contribution to the city.

Michael’s wife Louisa said:

“This event was all about celebrating Zorbas’ position in the city as the longest-running Greek restaurant, and it was a treat for my husband who has dedicated his life to the business. It was lovely to see all of our regulars and our family come together to celebrate everything that Zorbas is about.”

“I’m very proud that Zorbas is still as successful as ever, with customers spanning three generations still coming to see us on a regular basis. I think what makes us so successful is that our customers are our friends – not numbers – and it’s the friendly atmosphere that keeps them coming back.”

“It just goes to show that as long as you treat your customers well and sell wholesome, fresh food at a reasonable price you can last a long time.”

The restaurant, which is themed on the movie Zorba the Greek, features stills from the film on every wall with vine-covered lattices adorning the ceiling. It is a Liverpool institution, offering a broad range of authentic Greek-Cypriot cuisine in a relaxed environment, along with a large selection of classic Greek beverages.

Zorbas is open Monday to Saturday 4pm to 11.30pm and Sundays 2pm to 10pm.
