A budding entrepreneur with a charitable ambition has pledged his support to help the homeless this winter.

Tim Byrne, 24, who has created The Luna Card, a new benefit-based membership card for the top bars and restaurants in Liverpool, will donate a percentage of his profits during the winter months to homeless charities in Liverpool.

During his student days at university, Tim would often spend some of his student loan, to buy hot food and drinks for the homeless people he would pass on the streets. Witnessing the desolation of some of these people, has spurred him on to continue his giving – this time using his start-up business to do so.

Tim set up the Luna Card three months ago. Members can take advantage of exclusive access and discounts to some of the city’s best lifestyle venues. Membership costs £65 for a year.

The Whitechapel Centre, which supports thousands of people in need across Merseyside, every year, is just one of the charities Tim will help this winter.

Tim said:

“I have so much empathy for people with nowhere to live. From a very young age I have been moved by their situation and have always tried to help where I can. That’s why I have decided to support The Whitechapel Centre.

“It feels so good to know that I’m giving something back, whether it’s something small like blankets, clothes and food or a financial donation which will support the work the centre does.”

Ruth McCaughley, fundraising manager at The Whitechapel Centre, said:

“Charities and support centres such as ours are a vital source of warmth, comfort and support for homeless people all over Merseyside.

“We rely heavily on donations and the time that our volunteers give on a daily basis. As we head into winter and the weather starts to get colder, we need more support than ever to ensure we can offer people help when it is needed most.

“On behalf of everyone here at The Whitechapel Centre I would like to thank Tim for the support he has given us and his generous donation offer. The money will be used to provide hot meals, warm showers and housing advice.”

Tim has received support and guidance in his new venture from Spark Up, Liverpool’s biggest free business accelerator programme. It offers support and advice for budding entrepreneurs via their 12-week programme of workshops, seminars and one-to-one mentoring.
