Supermarket giant Aldi is carrying out a public consultation on plans to build new stores in Wirral and Liverpool, creating around 80 jobs. Tony McDonough reports

Aldi is continuing its expansion in Merseyside with a new store planned for Seacombe in Wirral and Wavertree in Liverpool.
Creating 40 jobs, the Seacombe outlet will be located at a vacant, brownfield site off Birkenhead Road. Aldi has started a public consultation on the plans as it prepares a planning application that will be submitted to Wirral Council for approval.
Opposite the junction with Kelvin Road, this site has had a number of previous uses including as a timber yard and pallet centre, and currently serves as a lorry park.
Aldi said: “An opportunity exists to transform this site, creating a new Aldi food store and improve shopping options for residents in the area.”
A public consultation on the plans has started and runs until May 11. The company added: “Aldi is keen to consult with the community ahead of submission so that we can hear your views first hand and take those into account as we finalise our proposals.
“We will report the outcome of this consultation in a Statement of Community Involvement submitted with the planning application and encourage you to participate and provide your thoughts.”

A public consultation is also open, running until May13, on Aldi’s proposals for a new store Wavertree Retail Park that would also see the creation of 40 jobs. This would be located on the site of the former Buzz Bingo and would include heat pumps and solar panels.

“Aldi has identified a clear need for a discount retailer in this part of Liverpool, with local shopping options in the immediate area limited to more expensive competitors,” the company said.
“A new Aldi food store at this site would improve choice and competition in Wavertree, reduce travel times for local shoppers and create 40 new, full-time jobs paid at an industry-leading rate, with hiring targeted at the local community.”
