The latest phase of work to restore historic Grade II-listed buildings at a Liverpool golf course has scooped a top award at the LABC (Local Authority Building Control) North West Building Excellence Awards.

The project to restore and convert the listed sandstone former stable block to create a bar/restaurant and first floor function venue at Allerton Manor Golf Course won the Best Small Commercial Project category in the awards.

The south Liverpool course, formerly operated by Liverpool City Council, is now run by Green Circle Leisure which has invested £5m in improvements to the course, social facilities and the site’s collection of listed heritage buildings.

Yvonne Jackson, managing director of Green Circle Leisure, said: “This is a great tribute to the efforts and creativity of our entire project team led by RGP Architects and the professionalism and support of the Building Control team at Liverpool City Council.

“One of the greatest challenges when we took over at Allerton Manor was to restore and bring back to life the site’s attractive historic buildings which were in a very poor state of repair, but were also essential to the site’s character and sense of place.

“From the outset we have put heritage conservation at the forefront of our approach, and this award from the LABC is recognition of that fact.”

Reid Lewis from RGP Architects added: “We were given a clear brief by Green Circle and the team at Allerton Manor based on an imaginative and sensitive approach to conservation and exploiting the site’s unique potential and character.

“It is not just about design and architectural vision, this award reflects the care, craftsmanship and attention to detail from all those involved in the project. We know how carefully the LABC judges evaluate projects, so this award means a great deal, and is really valued and respected by all building professionals.”

The award was also welcomed by Peter Kearns, the Liverpool City Council Building Control Officer who worked with the Green Circle team during the delivery of the refurbishment and conversion project.
