Supermarket chain Lidl submits planning application for new store in north Liverpool that will create 40 jobs as consultation reveals 96% of local people are in favour. Tony McDonough reports
Lidl has submitted a planning application to Liverpool City Council to open a new store at a site in north Liverpool after getting the thumbs-up from local people.
Creating around 40 jobs, the outlet will be Lidl’s first in the Croxteth district of the city when it opens on Storrington Avenue. 96% of residents who responded to a local consultation said they were in favour of the new store.
Earlier this month Lidl announced it planned to open a supermarket on the site of a former Taskers homeware store in Wavertree in south Liverpool. This would also create around 40 jobs.
Those in favour of the Lidl store in Croxteth left comments including “the sooner the better” and that they “can’t wait” for it to open. Others reinforced the increased investment to the area and the easier access to Lidl’s affordable prices.
Comprising more than 16,000 sq ft, the outlet will include an in-store bakery as well as the ever popular middle aisle. There will also be customer toilets with baby-changing facilities.
Externally the supermarket will offer space for cars and bicycles and will offer four electric vehicle charging points. Solar panels on the roof will help power the store.

Stuart Jardine, regional head of property at Lidl GB, said: “We’re delighted that residents are as excited about our plans to bring a new Lidl store to Croxteth as we are.
“Having spoken with residents during this consultation, it’s clear that the new jobs and investment into the local economy that our new store would bring is very much welcomed.
“We’d like to thank everyone for sharing their support so far, but to help make this store a reality we need households to continue sharing their support.”
