A film crew has been filming in the Bridewell in the city centre which was decommissioned as a jailhouse back in 1997 and is now owned by Caro Developments. Tony McDonough reports.
A former Liverpool Victorian jailhouse is to feature in a new science television series.
A film crew has been filming in the Bridewell in the city centre. The building was decommissioned as a jailhouse back in 1997.
The Grade II-listed site sat derelict for 16 years until Caro Developments transformed the site into short stay apartments and student accommodation.
Caro retained many of the original features including an untouched façade, British-bond brick walls and solid oak doors complete with mortice locks and food hatches.
The former exercise ground is now a glass-covered atrium that reveals echoes of its past life.
These features have made the Bridewell a popular site among film-makers with requests coming in from broadcasters such the BBC.
This further cements Liverpool’s status as film capital of the north with major films and TV shows being shot in the city in recent years.
257 film and TV projects came to the city last year – bringing in £11.5m and 2017.
Lee Darwen, director of operations at Caro, said: “The Bridewell truly is a unique building that contains so much history and character.
“For this reason, when we redeveloped the site it was extremely important for us to not lose the essence of the building’s rich history.
“I am thrilled that producers and film makers from across the country are showing so much interest in using The Bridewell as a filming location.
“It marks a celebration of Liverpool’s architectural history and strengthens the city’s status as a major player in the global film industry.”
