Chester Zoo named as third-best zoo in the world by TripAdvisor

With its 15,000 animals from more than 500 species it was also voted the number one zoo in the UK and was beaten only by Los Parque in Spain and San Diego in the US. Tony McDonough reports

Chester Zoo is the third-best zoo on the planet according to the world’s top travel website TripAdvisor.

And with its 15,000 animals from more than 500 species it was also voted the number one zoo in the UK and was beaten only by Los Parque in Spain and San Diego in the US.

The top 10 global ranking are based on millions of online reviews from visitors.

Jamie Christon, chief operating officer at Chester Zoo, said: “It especially delights us as this ranking is based purely on the millions of reviews and opinions of visitors. It’s a real seal of approval from the public. 

“With us being a registered conservation and education charity it means an awful lot – as every person that pays to come through our gates is contributing to our vital global conservation work, preventing extinction overseas and here in the UK.” 

The TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards are based on the millions of reviews and opinions from TripAdvisor travellers across the globe.

Award winners are determined using an algorithm that takes into account the quantity and quality of reviews gathered over a 12-month period.

  8. ZooParc de Beauval, Saint Aignan, France
  9. Bioparc Valencia, Valencia, Spain
  10. Folly Farm, Begelly, UK
