It’s a sell out for Lantern Company’s exciting new festival of light

Tickets for this week’s Luminous Landscapes event at Liverpool Festival Gardens have officially sold out.

Over 9,000 people will visit the city landmark over the course of three evenings – February 18, 19, and 20 (5.30-9pm) – to witness this brand new, illuminated celebration, brought to you by the world-famous Lantern Company, in partnership with Liverpool City Council and funding from Arts Council England.

Jo Pocock, artistic director of the Lantern Company, said:

“We are delighted to be able to announce Luminous Landscapes as a sold out event. The next couple of days are exciting and busy as we finalise all the installations and rehearsals for the opening on Thursday. The gardens are already looking really magical and we are looking forward to giving our audiences three very special evenings.”

Luminous Landscapes aims to raise environmental issues related to landfill and recycling in a humorous and thought-provoking way, inviting audiences to take up the challenge of reduce, reuse and recycle.

The woodlands of Liverpool Festival Gardens will be transformed into an extraordinary and strange luminous landscape, where what is usually hidden beneath the lake beds and forest floors creep, crawl and belch up to the surface, astonishing, challenging, delighting and horrifying audiences in equal measure.

Audiences will be free to roam the route at their own pace with hand-held lanterns, experiencing a world turned upside down, where micro becomes macro, humans change place with the insects and all experience the natural world from unimaginable new perspectives.

Community participation and celebration takes a central place in the festival and has been engaging over a thousand local people this week through community arts workshops, creating lanterns and luminous accessories to be carried at the event.

Luminous Landscapes comes thanks to the continued support and funding from Liverpool City Council’s Culture Liverpool, Arts Council England and Granada Foundation, as well as donations from the public, after the company was forced to cancel its annual Halloween Lantern Carnival in 2015 due to lack of funds.

Getting to Luminous Landscapes by train with Merseyrail – who are sponsoring the event – couldn’t be simpler. St Michael’s station is just a three-minute walk from the festival and there are regular trains throughout the evening. Kids go FREE with a Family Ticket for just £10, which gives up to two adults and three children, aged five-15, unlimited off-peak travel anywhere on the Merseyrail network (off-peak is after 9.30am Monday-Friday and all day on weekends and bank holidays). Individuals can also enjoy unlimited off-peak travel with a Merseyrail Day Saver from just £3.70 for adults and from £1.85 for under-18s. Plan your journey at www.merseyrail.org
