Students at the City of Liverpool College put themselves in the shop window for potential employers at an event attended by 30 building contractors.

Representatives from companies including Morgan Sindall, Kier, Laing O’Rourke, BAM and Carillion saw demonstrations from young people who are seeking apprenticeship positions.

The students are currently being trained at the college in a wide range of construction trade skills.

The event was held as part of National Apprentice Week, and was hosted by The Liverpool Regeneration Contractors Group, The City of Liverpool College, Liverpool City Council and Liverpool in Work.

The event gave businesses a chance to explore the campus and see first-hand the new talent that is on offer for the construction sector.

The demonstrations enabled the students to speak to contractors providing them with a clear understanding of their requirements and the opportunities available to those thinking of entering the sector.

Frank Reynolds, framework manager at Morgan Sindall, said: “The college is a fantastic asset to construction firms – the students there are a great resource for local contractors.

“The idea behind events like these is to secure invaluable opportunities for both parties.

“Students are given the chance to meet some of the industry’s top professionals while sector leaders are given the opportunity to see the remarkable standard.”

Elaine Bowker, principal of The City of Liverpool College, added: “Our commitment to providing initiatives for students who want to learn highly valuable skills means we have thousands of apprentices from the college in paid employment.

“Apprenticeships play a vital role in developing skills for priority sectors in the city region and, ultimately, play a vital role in growing the region’s economy.

“Our relationships in the construction industry are of huge value to students.”
