A new pedestrian island is to be created on a traffic hot spot in South Liverpool.

Liverpool City Council is to install the traffic calming measure on Mill Lane, Wavertree, which is a heavily used link road to Edge Lane.

The 6m long and 2m wide “pedestrian refuge” is to be funded through a neighbourhood fund, with work to begin this weekend.

The new pedestrian island is estimated to take four days to complete and will see the installation of temporary traffic lights on Mill Lane during construction.

Councillor Ann O’Byrne, Deputy Mayor of Liverpool, said: “Mill Lane is unusually wide and exceptionally busy and this has long been a matter of concern for pedestrian safety.

“With its proximity to Edge Lane and Wavertree High Street we’ve been looking at a number of solutions for the local community and am delighted at this outcome.

“This pedestrian island will provide residents with a safer passage while still maintaining traffic flow.”

Liverpool City Council is currently investing more than £250m to improve Liverpool’s road infrastructure through the Better Roads Programme.
