Peel Ports has provided vital cash and food supplies to an initiative called ‘Feeding Birkenhead’ that aims to “eliminate hunger” in the Wirral town.

The Port of Liverpool owner says staff at its head office and container terminal in Seaforth donated food parcels in dedicated collection boxes, and donated money towards a large shop of long-lasting food items.

Feeding Birkenhead is a coalition of churches, community groups and other organisations working together to supply food to those in need.

In addition to raising £150 for the shop, Peel staff donated food parcels that was able to fill a small van.

Mark Whitworth, chief executive of Peel Ports, said: “The food and cash donations were delivered to one of the nominated centres in Birkenhead and divided into parcels as part of the school half-term deliveries, providing crucial support to the families receiving them.”

Peel Ports Group periodically selects a local charity to support at each of its sites and encourages its staff to give back to the community regularly.

Feeding Birkenhead was chosen by staff due to its wide-ranging impact and comprehensive approach to tackling hunger.

The project was launched in 2014 by Frank Field, Labour MP for Birkenhead, and the elements of it are being rolled out nationally by Feeding Britain, due to its success.
