Business leaders behind the Team Liverpool recovery campaign are urging people to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and have regular tests to see if they have the virus.

Comprising figures such as Liverpool BID Company chief executive Bill Addy, Donna Hewitt of Liverpool ONE, Mowgli founder Nisha Katona and Liverpool in MIPIM lead Stephen Cowperthwaite, Team Liverpool is keen to get the city up and running post-pandemic.

They came together in early April to launch the campaign designed to encourage people back into city centre offices, retail outlets and hospitality venues. And they recognise that a high take-up of the COVID-19 vaccine and regular tests are key to its success.

So far the vaccine roll-out has been welcomed by most people across the UK. However, there is a hard core of denialists who have refused the vaccine and are determined to spread misinformation about its safety and efficacy. There is also concern that complacency may mean a fall in the take-up of testing.

Team Liverpool chair, chief execute of of Downtown in Business Frank McKenna, explained: “As the country starts to open up again, we recognise how important the city centre is to the economic revival of Liverpool.

“If we are to save jobs and ensure a ‘bounce back’ in our key visitor economy sector, it is vital that the whole ecosystem returns to town – office workers, shoppers, and visitors, indigenous and international.

“However, we are equally aware of the continued dangers of the virus and therefore we want people to come back into their offices, our shops and into our hospitality venues in a safe and secure fashion.

“That is why we are urging people to ‘Take one for the Team’. Take a vaccination. Take a test. That way, you protect yourself, your colleagues, and you make it less likely that we will suffer a further spike in infection rates and another disastrous lockdown.”
