A Liverpool-based global supplier of plastic polymers for products such as water tanks and traffic cones cuts annual losses despite a 5.7% fall in revenues to £38m. Tony McDonough reports

Liverpool-based plastic raw material producer Matrix Polymers is reporting improved margins and increased sales volumes despite a fall in revenues.

Located in Speke, Matrix Polymers is a global supplier of plastic polymer products to the rotational moulding industry. They can be used in the production of a whole range of products including water tanks and traffic cones.

Founded by Martin Coles in 1992, the business now operates factories in Liverpool and Poland and out of other locations in Malaysia, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand. It employs more than 100 people.

In March 2019, Thailand-based PTT Global Chemical took a 49% share in the holding company for all the Matrix Polymers operating subsidiaries. Martin Coles retains a 51% share in the business and is the chief executive.

In its annual accounts for the 12 months to December 31, 2025, published on Companies House, Matrix Polymers reported a 5.7% fall in revenues to £38m and pre-tax losses of £752,000, down from pre-tax losses of £1.3m in the previous year.

Writing in the annual report, Martin said: “Despite the challenging environment during the year, the reduction in turnover was counteracted by an increase in gross margin.”

He added: “The outlook for 2026 led by volatile world conditions, has seen a significantly increased selling price combined with increased volumes and market share.”
