Alder Hey hospital to celebrate centenary at Liverpool Cathredral
Liverpool Cathedral is hosting a special concert to mark the centenary of Alder Hey – organised by a former surgeon at the hospital and directed by a world renowned organ transplant surgeon.
The Vale of Clwyd Singers will be joined by Crosby Symphony Orchestra, world-renowned organist Ian Tracey and award-winning Welsh soprano Sioned Terry for the celebratory event on Tuesday.
The concert, which will be directed by Robert Sells, former head of transplant surgery at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, has been planned as part of the hospital’s centenary celebrations by Professor David Lloyd, a former professor of paediatric surgery at Alder Hey.
Professor Lloyd retired in 2004 but has been closely involved as the hospital celebrates 100 years of innovation and excellence in children’s health.
Alder Hey was the first to test penicillin in 1944, saving a child from pneumonia and was also the first hospital to establish a dedicated surgical neonatal unit in the UK and the first to cure the UK’s most commonly encountered congenital heart defect.
Professor Lloyd said:
“I have always had an interest in classical music so this concert seemed a perfect way to celebrate Alder Hey’s prestigious history.”
“I knew Professor Robert Sells when he was head of transplant surgery at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and I had heard the Vale of Clwyd Singers and Crosby Symphony Orchestra perform on a number of occasions, so I was delighted when they agreed to perform in Liverpool for Alder Hey.”
“To have such well known classical performers as Ian Tracey and Sioned Terry involved makes this event extra special.”
“Robert used to operate at Alder Hey from time to time, and I know he regards it a privilege to contribute to these centenary celebrations.”
“The programme we have chosen for the evening features a range of celebratory compositions ideal for this occasion.”
Professor Lloyd said it was “fitting” that the concert was taking place on Armistice Day.
He explained:
“Part of Alder Hey was used to treat wounded serviceman during the First World War.”
“We hope as many people as possible will join us in celebrating this incredible landmark for Alder Hey.”
Tickets for the concert are £12 from the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral shop, by calling 0151 702 7255 or online at www.cathedralshop.com
Performances start at 7.30pm.
