LCH & Merseyrail ‘on track’ with cancer campaign

Liverpool Community Health (LCH) NHS Trust and Merseyrail are partnering to support a new cancer awareness campaign starting this February.

The campaign will kick off on Friday 5th February, coinciding with World Cancer Day, which is also taking place this week.

Throughout the day, health advisors will be on hand at Liverpool South Parkway giving out free information leaflets to passengers and commuter about how to spot the early signs and symptoms of cancer, and improve your health and wellbeing.

The team will be running cancer awareness events at the following times and locations:

  • Friday 5th February – at Liverpool South Parkway (8:00am to midday)
  • Wednesday 17th February – at Liverpool Central Station (all day)
  • Wednesday 2nd March – at James Street Station (8:00am to midday)
  • Tuesday 15th March – at Lime Street Station (8:00am to midday)

World Cancer Day aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about the disease, and encouraging governments and individuals across the world to take action.

Although there are more than 200 different types of cancer  – breast, lung, prostate and bowel cancers- account for over half (53%) of all new cases in the UK (CR UK 2012).

Olufemi Olajide, Health Promotion Specialist from Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust said,

“World Cancer Day is all about learning how to take control for your own health by knowing how to spot the early signs and symptoms of cancer, and these events are about equipping people to do that.

This is really important because although cancer treatments are getting better all the time, getting an early diagnosis and treatment can give you a much better chance of beating the illness.”

Jane English, HR Director at Merseyrail, said:

“Merseyrail is determined to support the local community, and working with Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust to promote better public health is a key component of this. We are pleased that we can play a small part in the city region to heighten awareness and understanding of cancer and other serious conditions.”
