Wirral Council moves a step closer to the multi-million pound construction of the new Birkenhead Market as it appoints a contractor to carry out pre-construction works. Tony McDonough

Wirral Council is pushing on with the creation of a new market for Birkenhead by appointing Seddon Construction to carry out pre-construction works.
Bolton-based Seddon won the contract after competing for the job with three other firms. It will now start work on the unit at 1 Princes Pavement, next to Birkenhead bus station, which was formerly home to retailer Argos.
Initial plans for a new market on the former House of Fraser site on Grange Road were shelved in December 2023. Birkenhead has had a town centre market since 1835 with the current facility based within the Grange Precinct.
The council took over the market in 2019 and revealed ambitions to build a new facility in 2020. Late in 2024 it released images of what the new market will look like.

Leader of Wirral Council, Paul Stuart, said: “Progress on the new market is an important part of our wider plans for Birkenhead so it’s great to see this continuing to move forward.
“We are committed to delivering a vibrant and popular new Birkenhead Market and this is part of a massive investment in the town and its central shopping area.
“Our intention is to ensure Birkenhead is a destination people want to visit as part of attracting the inward investment which will bring high-quality jobs for our residents, give extra stimulus to the local economy, boost business opportunities, and through all this foster economic growth.

“In this way we can make Wirral an even better place where people want to live, work and raise their families.”
The “soft strip” demolition of the unit at Princes Pavement was completed late last year, opening the way for the fit-out work starting for the new market.
