Cosmetic dentistry and aesthetics entrepreneur Tracey Bell has been awarded a Masters Degree in Dental Law and Ethics.

And the Liverpool-based businesswoman says she intends to to use her knowledge and experience to highlight bad practice and negligence in her sector.

Ms Bell, who runs a cosmetic dentistry and aesthetics clinic in the city centre, was one of just five dentists in the UK to achieve this qualification from the University of Bedfordshire.

Expert Witness

She completed her Masters over three years, studying law, medical negligence and dental practice and she obtained a Cardiff University Law School Expert Witness Certificate.

Ms Bell has also completed a research project focusing on cosmetic injectables such as Botox and how they are regulated in the UK, which is set to be published in the UK medical press.

Tighter regulation

Last year she highlighted the need for tighter regulation regarding the way in which Botox and fillers are administered.

She conducted a survey of more than 300 dentists as part of her studies, asking questions such as ‘What training did you initially undertake in order to provide Botox and fillers?’.

“I was keen to find out more about the views of fellow dental professionals and also to find out how much ongoing training they’d had in administering injectable treatments,” said Ms Bell.

More safeguards

At present, there is no regulatory body or any formal process of regulation regarding the administration of non-surgical facial aesthetics and Tracey, like many in the industry, is keen to see more safeguards for patients brought in.

She is also currently working with leading universities in the North West on postgraduate development in aesthetic medicine, law and ethics among policy makers.
